yaoi/bl recommendations
this is a page for archiving my yaoi/bl recommendations, which i post first on my cohost page! as with any type of media, there's heaps of bad and mediocre work and it can be difficult to find things that are actually good if you don't have the patience to sift through everything. unlike many other genres and media, i don't really see people posting curated recommendations for bl & yaoi. in my experience people talking about yaoi and bl are usually talking about it in terms of Discourse(tm) - aka arguments - and are not discussing it as fans of the genre, which is a shame.
i read a lot of yaoi & bl and i do have a lot of patience for sifting through the mediocre and bad stuff (because i like it just fine) - which is not the case for a lot of other things for me! (i can't stand mediocre-to-bad yuri, for example.) so, here are things i read and would recommend.

each recommendation lists some ⚠️ content warnings ⚠️ and comes with my patented (not actually patented) silly ratings system; i give each work a score out of five in sex 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥, spice 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶, moe ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️, drama 😱😱😱😱😱, and classiness 🥂🥂🥂🥂🥂. i will also indicate which works have been licensed for official english-language release along with links to purchase them!
these are i think mostly self-explanatory, except maybe "spice" which i use as a catchall term for things that evoke a particular mood. think of it as the opposite of mild/sweet or a counterpart to moe. content that makes you raise your eyebrows and go "oh?? my my my!!" when you hear about it or see it.

everything expressed in here is just my opinion, and all of my opinions are objectively correct always!

Akuheki, by Iimo

Not licensed (sad emoji)

daimon is a mild-mannered salaryman; unremarkable at work, agreeable, avoids conflict. he's always getting bullied by his bratty coworker kojima, but he never gets mad... until, finally, he does.

daimon has a dark side he's been suppressing all this time, and kojima's relentless provocation finally gets him to snap and reveal the sadist within. daimon violently rapes and nearly murders kojima, and kojima reveals that he is a hardcore masochist who wants to be killed, sexually, and has been trying to provoke daimon into violence this whole time (hornily).

darkly funny, with heaps of explicit violent porn. it has what i guess could be described as "nonconsensual consensual nonconsent" ?? since for kojima, getting violently raped is a fetish he enjoys.

i think this is a fun twist on the "romantic rape" yaoi trope - i guess you could call it a "deconstruction" although i feel like the word is overused to the point of meaninglessness lol. rather than rape being simply the default normal way for guys to get together, this manga points out that this would only be the case if the victim-uke was an unhinged extreme masochist and additionally that it would take an equally unhinged & extreme sadist to be okay with that.

i'm a big fan of violence and hatemance/blackrom and this is very up my alley. i was kind of on edge the whole time worrying that this would have a gooey/fluffy ending where it suddenly threw all the characterization+etc in the garbage, but thankfully this is not that type of manga! it toes the line a little bit, but it ultimately ends up being more of a "only i'm allowed to kill you" kind of a thing (which i like) rather than a "wow kojima i truly love you... seeing you hurt is so sad... we shall cure each other of our fetishes with the power of love and only have normal sex from now on..." thing (which would be awful)

kojima doesn't have a tragic backstory or any particular Reason for his hardcore fetishes, which is refreshing. he does sex work - as a dom, ironically - and this is also not tragic, which is similarly refreshing.

i like both kojima and daimon a lot! they are fun freaky guys. i feel like we get a good balance of insight into both of them, they play off each other really well, their dynamic is odd and compelling. i like that they still have to work together at the office.

i do think it's extremely silly that this somehow manages to shoehorn in a "uke gets kidnapped and has to be rescued" event when kojima actively *wants* to get kidnapped and murdered, but whatever. it works okay, it's just a bit much. (the whole manga is a bit much though, when you get down to it, so...)

this is kind of similar to zetsubou ni nake (rec). it's also kind of similar to black and white, an excellent yuri about two office ladies beating the shit out of each other (and fucking). (highly recommend)

Haru Kakete, Uguisu | Warbler, Sing of Spring, by Nago Nayuta

Official English release

a student/teacher romance. bothersome but cheerful delinquent shirakawa loves to fight; his new homeroom teacher, narumi, is a former delinquent and a legendary undefeated delinquent fighter! shirakawa wants to fight him one-on-one, but narumi only wants to be a proper teacher.

a short one-volume/six-chapter bl. one of the mildest student/teacher romances i've read; they don't actually get together until shirakawa graduates. a rare "we can't, you're a student" type of teacher love interest who (mostly...) sticks to it. as is somewhat common for a short bl like this, the only sex is in the sixth chapter as a sort of epilogue.

this one's very normal. just a sort of regular middle of the road bl light reading. in a good way! the characters are familiar types, but charming; i'm a sucker for the narumi-type especially. he reminds me a lot of himuro-sensei from tokimeki memorial girl's side, but with the added spice of a violent past.

Choco Strawberry Vanilla, by Psyche Delico

Not licensed (sad emoji)

hiroi shares everything he likes with his best friend take, including his lovers. take is content to simply go along with whatever makes hiroi happy. after a girl breaks up with hiroi because she likes take more, hiroi's rebound is the infatuated minegishi, who is willing to go along with whatever hiroi says-- despite his dislike for take.

a tense and interesting threesome story! one of my personal favorites; i find the character dynamics very compelling. the jealousy, manipulation, and tension all feel very grounded despite the characters all being pretty odd. psyche delico, the mangaka, is really fucking good at tension.

there is a lot of sex, but it's not exactly hardcore porn and wouldn't make especially good jerkoff material i don't think. (ymmv, obviously).

sudo, a veteran cop, is on the tail of a sexy notorious jewel thief named grey. the two of them have an arrangement... grey always returns what he stole, if sudo has sex with him!! hey... could it be... that this notorious thief is only doing elaborate heists because he wants to fuck sudo...?? (yes)

would not recommend if you're not into handcuffs, as this has a lot of sex and it almost all involves handcuffs lmao. this is only one volume and is completed, i think, but the ending is a bit unsatisfying. seems like a silly thing to say about a oneshot about a jewel thief and a cop having handcuff sex in a variety of locations, but there's a bit of story that's teased and not quite resolved to my satisfaction. however! very fun nonetheless.

Yoru wa Tomodachi, by Ido Gihou

Not licensed (sad emoji)

masumi and tobita are college acquaintances and fuckbuddies. tobita is a withdrawn, expressionless type with no friends; he's also a masochist. masumi is sociable, but detached. they started hooking up because masumi was mildly interested.

this manga is sort of hard to describe... it's got a slow dreamy pace, and it's not "romantic" as much as it is just about a relationship. but it's not *not* romantic, exactly.

the story is entirely from masumi's point of view, leaving tobita as more of an enigma. he's not very expressive outside of sex, and doesn't talk much. masumi is sort of the other side of the coin; he's outwardly quite "normal" but internally quite emotionally detached and has trouble engaging with and understanding his own feelings. though he initially isn't interested in bdsm and thinks to himself that he isn't particularly a sadist, his relationship with tobita enables him to explore a side of himself that he otherwise is unaware of - one that is possessive and violent.

understated but still emotionally tense.

not really sure how to content warn for this one; they're engaged in consensual bdsm theoretically - they talk about it, they have a safeword, etc - but it's not exactly ~100% consent-positive rack style of Healthy BDSM(tm)~. there are no explicit boundary/consent violations, but it obviously comes close and the line between "playing a role for tobita's sexual enjoyment" and "sincere expression of his feelings" is increasingly blurry for masumi in a way that is emotionally intense and could be viscerally upsetting for some people but not in a way that's easily condensed into a brief content warning.

this is one of my All Time Favorite bl!!!!!!!!!! it's soooo good. i think the sketchy art style might not be everyone's thing, but i really love it. ido gihou is really excellent, i love their work and this is my favorite of them.

there is a lot of sex in this! masumi and tobita's relationship is primarily sexual. it's not hardcore porn, but if you're into the flavor of bdsm stuff in it then it is *really* hot. imo.

Kakkou no Yume | The Dream of the Cuckoos, by Tamekou

Official English release

natsuka has always been obsessively in love with his friend hakushima, but has never confessed his feelings. instead he spends his time with his sex friend seno. but then, one day, hakushima and seno get into an accident near natsuka's apartment. when seno wakes up in the hospital, he says he's actually hakushima - their souls swapped bodies when they crashed.

a psychological drama of obsessive unrequited love with a surprisingly positive resolution. (whether the happyish ending is a good thing or not is ambiguous)

it works best without spoilers imo, but here they are anyway!

seno convinces natsuka that the accident caused a fanciful body swap situation, like in an anime, and that he is actually hakushima. they start living together and date for months - and then hakushima wakes up. seno was lying the whole time! natsuka learns that seno has been in love with him since high school, much like how he has been in love with hakushima - and natsuka didn't even remember who he was.

the reveal takes long enough that you get suckered in to believing seno's lie, and the reveal was such a shock!! to me anyway haha. i love a good emotional gut punch, and kakkou no yume nails that.

i love it when people are unhealthily obsessed with each other. that shit rules. the romantic feelings involved (natsuka->hakushima and seno->natsuka) are all that - more so than "in love" - so the positive resolution might not land well for everybody... i'm ambivalent honestly. on the one hand, natsuka is able to move past his all-consuming obsession with hakushima... on the other hand, i'm not sure getting together with him is good for *seno*... but i like that the manga isn't completely like "everything is totally fine!!" when seno is such a messed-up guy.

Not licensed (sad emoji)

a supernatural horror-flavored drama about manuel, a traumatized nonverbal man, and his incubus companion/friend/caretaker/lover. they are hunted by a religious cult of monster hunters determined to kill the incubus.

there's also a side couple in the monster hunter cult; patrick, who can read people's minds when he touches them, and his partner oswald. oswald is mostly not a significant presence at all, but patrick is! he uses his psychic powers to communicate with manuel.

there is a lot of violence and torture, including gangrape, and some gore. the incubus kills and eats people. the relationship between manuel and the incubus is consensual, but both of them get raped by bad guys and there is more rape than consensual sex. (all rapists get killed, many of them get killed and eaten as well).

a fun yucky action yaoi. i think people who like supernatural the tv show might like this? it has a sort of similar grungy american rural horror-action kinda vibe full of square-jawed fellas wearing jackets standing near cars.

Not licensed (sad emoji)

miura can read minds and is used to hearing everyone's nasty thoughts all them. one day, he meets abe, a quiet guy... who is actually constantly thinking about how he has a huge crush on miura!!

light and fluffy with a dollop of (in my opinion) overwrought angst. miura's tragic backstory is that in middle school his friends got mad at him, which i think would land better as angst if he was in high school - but he is in university.

the art style is cute and pretty, but leans a bit heavily on shoujo sparkles and aesthetic for my taste. (gestures at picture) i wish it was a bit more committed to being funny and not so fluffy, but i do still think it's cute and i think it'll land a lot better for someone less allergic to fluffy romance than i.

complaints aside, i really like Psychic Angst where someone is overwhelmed by all the thoughts they're hearing all the time, which this has! abe's inner monologue is really cute and funny, and i like that miura is both standoffish and overly desperate to please.

Zetsubou ni Nake | Cry of Despair, by Shinou Ryo

Official English release

six years ago, akamine drunkenly raped utsumi in an alleyway. utsumi, consumed with hatred, has been planning his revenge ever since; akamine, however, has no memory of the incident.

a gritty, indulgent, soap opera-ish drama featuring: crying! smoking! deceit! betrayal! corporate espionage! regret! hatred! unrequited love! attempted murder!

what this manga lacks in coherent storytelling it makes up for in art, vibes, and drama. lots of lovingly-rendered fingers and mouths on cigarettes and rumpled business suits. if you like businessmen in suits, smoking, and hatred, it is packed full of Appeal.

the sex is explicit and there's a lot of it - noncon, dubcon, and consensual.

the art style is really interesting and somewhat unusual; i find it really pleasing to look at, personally. i'm not sure how to describe it exactly; it's like a modern polished version of the old-school viewfinder/okane ga nai Triangle Shoulder Seme look.

complaints: the characters are pretty loosely defined, being mostly vessels for The Drama, and the sequence of events is honestly a little confusing, especially since the pacing is kind of all over the place. honestly, the vibes and art are good enough that it didn't bother me that much, hence the recommendation.

Tantei Jimusho no Kainushi-sama | The (Pet) Detective Agency, by noji

Official English release

the adventures of fumika, a private detective, and his scary-looking pink-haired assistant rou. even though they're theoretically normal detectives, they've ended up taking on a lot of pet-related cases because animals are really drawn to rou. rou loves fumika, but fumika keeps rejecting him... alas...!

a lighthearted silly episodic manga. they take on a different little case each chapter, all pretty low-stakes and heartwarming. they adopt a really cute fat cat. the dynamic is cute and funny. there's a lot to like here! rou is cute, fumika is cute. their relationship is established at the beginning and doesn't change much, and there isn't really a Plot, but this is still a fun entertaining read. especially for anyone with a fondness for detective/assistant shipping!

naturally the uke gets kidnapped and tied to a chair by a love rival - it's very difficult to not get kidnapped and tied to a chair by a love rival as an uke - but it's a very mild kidnapping and resolved quickly, because this is a lighthearted jokey manga and totally uninterested in having Big Drama haha.

there's no (onscreen) sex in this one, despite rou's best efforts. they have sex off-screen, but the most you see is them shirtless post-sex in the epilogue. it's something on their minds, though, and they talk about it, so it's not chaste enough to get on my nerves.

two high school students, akira and kanata, who always used to make eye contact in the hallways slowly become friends, sharing quiet lunch hours together. they don't have anything in common, and yet they're drawn to each other anyway. kanata feels he can open up to akira in a way he can't with any of his other friends.

meanwhile, akira has an ongoing semi-casual sex friendship with his older brother's friend that he keeps a secret.

they fall in love! slow burn, very quiet-feeling. a nice gentle-feeling romance in which not a lot happens. the teens both have big teen feelings about soccer (kanata) and being gay (akira), but in a fairly lowkey way that doesn't feel too melodramatic. lots of long conversations about feelings and wistful gazing.

this really captures a dreamy nostalgic feeling, and akira and kanata's relationship is really well-captured. that's what it's like to be friends and love someone... it's like that...!!! it's perfectly sweet without being saccharine. there's a very brief epilogue/extra chapter at the end that made me actually tear up.

i don't think this has been licensed, but it's very much the type of thing that seems like it would be - it has that sort of Extremely Acceptable vibe, if you know what i mean. apart from akira's side relationship... i think some people would find that off-putting, especially since kanda (older brother's friend) and akira started their relationship when kanda was in college and akira was in middle school and it is not portrayed/discussed as predatory. heads up if that sort of thing bothers you!

Ashita Niji ga Denakute mo | May Tomorrow Bring Rainbows, by Kihara Noriko

Official English release

chitose is a drag queen who works at a gay bar. charming at work but in actuality somewhat irritable and short-tempered, he uses an anonymous phone call app to vent his work complaints to strangers every night; he hits it off particularly well with one insomniac businessman, ueki, who always listens to his complaints. ueki tracks him down in person and discovers that chitose is gay, and their easy friendship is transformed into something much more uncertain.

as their friendship develops, chitose falls for him while believing ueki is straight. ueki is falling for him, too, of course.

ueki's sincere interest in and awe for chitose and his drag work sets him apart from the typical "straight" love interest in this kind of gay-for-you romance, i think; he seems surprised with himself for falling for a man, but not shocked or alarmed at all, and the way he is awkward feels very real. chitose is actually the one having more complicated feelings about ueki being straight than ueki. i like that there's a bunch of extras at the gay bar heckling chitose for falling for a straight guy, and i like the very bittersweet minor substory about the bar's mama.

this is actually one of those spinoff manga about side characters from a previous bl, but i didn't and still haven't read the thing this is spun off from. the other couple makes several appearances and their vibe wasn't especially appealing to me.

i really love the art style of this and think it's wonderful to look at. this is a good reminder to myself to read kihara noriko's other stuff...

this is another single-volume/six chapter one where the sex is at the end. it's very mild, but it is there. the whole manga is pretty mild, honestly! (certainly not spicy.) a little bit of drama, a bit of misunderstanding, a bit of angst, but not a lot of any of those things. two very sincere people like each other a lot and get together at the end.

Boku no Barber e Yokoso, by Tsuchino Kiyu

Not licensed (sad emoji)

iga is a withdrawn and anxious salaryman; yanagi is a sexy and forthright barber. they fall in love.

not much to this oneshot, really, but i like it! it's sweet!

i think i have a bit of a weakness for haircut scenarios - the vulnerability of being worked on, the physical contact, the tension between the intimacy of the touch and the fact that it's an everyday practical and professional interaction... it's a really good scenario for fluff (as in this one) and for tension (as in color recipe).

no tension here, though, haha! just a bit of the usual immediately-solved romance misunderstanding.

the oblivious type can be kind of annoying, but in this case iga is oblivious because of his anxiety and not because he's stupid, so it doesn't bother me too much. i wish yanagi was a bit more fleshed out as a character, but he serves his purpose as an ideal boyfriend type without feeling too bland.

Loss Time ni Hanamuke o | Send Them A Farewell Gift for the Lost Time, by cocomi

Official English release

toui (a writer) and tsukushi (a hairdresser) broke up a month ago after being together for four years. both of them find it difficult to move on after being together for so long, though; they keep hooking up again, they muse over what went wrong and reminisce over their happy memories.

this is one of those short things i don't have a ton to say about. it's just good! i like how it captures the bittersweet love of people whose relationship just didn't work out for normal reasons. they're so used to each other, and they have so much invested in each other, but the relationship still just didn't work out.

they do get back together, of course, but i like that it feels both sweet and sad, still, because you can kind of tell they're maybe going to be on and off forever and maybe not entirely happy. i guess YMMV on the happiness level of the ending - it's played pretty upbeat, but since most of the manga is about the frustration and push/pull of wanting to be broken up but having so much relationship that it's hard to let go the get-back-together doesn't feel as 100% "yahoo, all is well!" as it might otherwise.

i like the tension, i like the dynamic, i like the messiness. it feels like getting a good dish of juicy gossip, hahaha. i'm also a fan of "ahhgh we shouldn't... but i wanna..." sexual relationships, which they have - they hook up a bunch post-breakup and tsukushi is annoyed with himself about it. it's fun!

MADK, by Suzuri Ryo

Official English release

makoto, a high schooler with an overwhelming desire to eat flesh, summons a demon to grant him his wish. his extreme fucked up fetishes have made him a neurotic suicidal outcast, and he is willing to sacrifice his life for the chance to experience brief happiness with a demon.

when makoto declares himself satisfied, the demon kills him... sort of.

j, the demon, rips makoto's head off and takes him to the demon world to make him a demon as well. there, makoto embarks on a quest to become a demon powerful enough to destroy j and in the process learns a lot about demon society.

this starts off as brutal ero-guro and then shifts into something more like a monstery fantasy adventure with ero-guro as a side element. it's a bit odd, since from the setup you expect it to be just a nonstop cannibal fuckfest, but it works just fine and the demon worldbuilding is fun and interesting.

while it's horror flavored and has a lot of extreme violence, there's not a ton of tension or drama - makoto is not suuuuper bothered by the horrific things that happen to him, and he's turned on by the horrific things that happen to other people. he does do some crying at the beginning, but he always bounces back pretty quick.

something i really like about makoto is how he's both miserable and tortured but also nasty and evil. that rules imo. he's got a fun personality. and i love it when anime guys lounge dramatically and evilly smirk, which j does literally nonstop. shameless fanservice... for me!

i loooove the art style in this. it's so dreamy and visceral and glamorous. there's some fun-looking demons, too, although they're *mostly* just sexy guys.

mildly interesting fun fact: the mangaka isn't anonymous. i feel like the majority of bl mangaka are mostly anonymous, especially people who do more extreme content, but this guy's just put his wallet name on it. he worked on some monster hunter games.

i was so surprised that this has an english release; it's pretty unusual for something this gross to get licensed, and sublime seems to skew pretty heavily towards like... old-school yaoi hands stuff (viewfinder etc) and over the top porny humor (yarichin bitch club etc).

Tomoya Ishida, an ordinary 29-year-old magazine editor, meets the 54-year-old openly gay chef Ayumu Mitsuya when he's sent to pick up his manuscript at his house. mitsuya-sensei cooks for him, and ishida is more charmed than he thought he would be!

they see each other once a month when ishida comes to pick up his writing for work, and each time they eat together. they have an easy pleasant rapport. ishida falls in love and rediscovers what it's like to feel passionate and excited about life; mitsuya rediscovers the joy of being adored...

a sweet age gap romance! i love mitsuya-sensei a lot. he feels very warm and fun, someone who seems like he'd be fun to be friends with. there's lots of lovely illustrations and descriptions of food, so this is a fun one if you're into cooking/food-centric stuff! the art is nice and polished (especially the food), there's a cute dog, there are charming side characters. both ishida and mitsuya read as adults, they feel grounded and real without being gritty/tragic/whatever. it's sweet and low-drama without being saccharine or cutesy. really good stuff.

no sex in this one! perfectly sfw. not even a bonus chapter with sex, as far as i know.

this is a real slam dunk of a romance, an easy recommendation for anybody! it is really Just Right in every way, i think. it isn't licensed in english yet, but it feels like a perfect candidate for it! maybe someday :)

The Summer Hikaru Died

Official English release

yoshiki's best friend hikaru went missing from their rural village one summer, and when he came back he was not himself. hikaru has been replaced by a Thing from the mountain forest; yoshiki struggles to reconcile his grief, affection, and fear.

a *beautifully*-drawn horror-flavored slice of life; tense, sad, sweet, and funny.

it's a slow burn and still ongoing; so far the romance aspect has been subtle, with the focus being on their feelings and relationship as a whole. if you're looking for a straight-up romance, this one's not for you.

⚠️content warnings: murder, body horror.

Toritan (Birds of a Feather), by Yamamoto Kotetsu

Official English release

inusaki is a private detective in theory, but in practice he mostly ends up helping people with random miscellaneous chores. especially anything bird-related. he has the ability to understand and speak to birds; this has always been very aggravating to him, because a bird was really rude to him when he was a child.

but one day... he meets a crow, and they really hit it off. this crow... he's kind of... cool and handsome?! inusaki falls for the crow. but little does he know the crow is actually a guy!! and he knows the guy!!

yes, the true identity of the bird is the handsome son of the owner of inusaki's favorite cafe, mitsuru. mitsuru has the ability to possess birds' bodies.

a silly fluff romance that hits pretty much all the expected misunderstanding beats you would expect, but it's very funny because one of them is a bird. the comedic effect is deeply enhanced by the very sincere and very normal romance story. i am not sure how much this manga is funny on purpose.

there are a few typical romance-plot misunderstandings, lots of blushing and shoujo sparkles. "b-but we're both guys!" / "i'm not gay, i'm just in love with youuuu" both present. this manga is soooo trashy BL. if i could give it negative classiness points somehow, i would.

this manga is not good, but it is funny and likeable. it's wild, but in a very normal way for BL to be wild, if that makes sense.

as is frequently the case, there's only a little bit of sex, it's at the very end, and it's not very explicit. it reads as even more of an afterthought here than it usually does; it's very minimal, generic, and not especially sexy.

the age gap element is a weird detail that doesn't actually come up; neither of them bring it up. mitsuru is still in high school (he turns 18 a few chapters in, they don't start dating until a while after that) and inusaki is somewhere in his 20s. you would think it would come up - it usually does? usually i feel like there would be a token "i can't be in love with him, he's in high school!" but there isn't one. if neither of them are going to mention it, why not just have them both be the same age? it's not doing any age gap fanservice or drama, it's just this extraneous bit.

Color Recipe, by Harada

Not licensed (sad emoji)

shoukichi is a talented but unsociable hairstylist who struggles at work because he's so bad with people. fukusuke, a popular but less skilled hairstylist who excels at charming customers, starts working at the same salon. they don't get along at all; fukusuke delights in picking fights with the short-tempered shoukichi.

fukusuke sexually assaults him, then manipulates him into a friendship, then spirals into increasingly nightmarish abusive behavior from there. a really good creepy horror-bl with a sadist abusive seme. deeply unnerving.

unfortunately the really good horror elements are somewhat spoiled by the iffy ending, which is too far into "sincere romance" territory for my comfort. *however*, if you can ignore that, this is a real slam dunk of a psychological horror yaoi. the intensity of the rest of it does not at all lend itself well to a grudging tsundere reconciliation at the end.

this is really not the best of harada's work, but i've reread it the most! it's very compelling, and has that sort of shouting-NOOOO-at-the-screen quality that you get in some horror movies, which i love.

harada's sex scenes are intense and particularly explicit.

Minegishi-san wa Ootsu-kun ni Tabesasetai | Manly Appetites: Minegishi Loves Otsu, by Mito

Official English release

otsu and minegishi are office coworkers. minegishi, the sexiest most popular guy in the office, is always bringing otsu snacks and treats because he loves to see otsu smile and enjoy his food. otsu is a prickly tsundere who is totally oblivious to minegishi's obvious crush.

completely sexless but cute and funny. i'm a sucker for a crabby put-upon tsundere type as well as a miserable salaryman type, so i really love otsu. chubby guys in bl are pretty rare, and it is a bit of a shame that it's all about him eating food... it toes the line of being outright tacky about it.

features an awful lot of blushing and generic misunderstandings, especially in the later bits. it's funny at first; the longer it goes on, the less charming it is imo. this romance is also so chaste it gets a little annoying... they take a while to get together and they don't ever even kiss. they hold hands once. so... uh... keep that in mind, haha.

in addition to an official english release, this has an anime! which i haven't watched because it's just like... cheap chibis bobbling around kind of thing, i think. still, super impressive for what started out as a series of comics posted on the mangaka's twitter!

i think the official english title is pretty stupid (minegishi-san specifically likes to watch otsu eat, which is kind of important...) but oh well.
